Artist Statement

My work is almost always mechanical, and it is usually about the qualities possessed by living things. That can mean anything, but it usually means poking fun at physical and mental characteristics; or it can mean exploiting psychological or sociological issues for their entertainment value. It’s not done in as specific a way as, for example, describing the human body using mechanics. It’s more about describing any aspect of life using mechanics and figurative elements to capture people’s attention and imagination. The mechanics are not likely to become metaphorical because I don’t see their presence as ironic. They are just important for my enjoyment, and the primary way I choose to communicate.

I am influenced by my interest in Automata, which were early attempts to build machines in the form of living things in order to capture the essence of life using mechanical means. Besides the fact that I am fascinated by their cleverness, I want my work to be able to “capture the essence of life” in a similar manner by attempting to define a psychological concept, or a moment, or an event- over a period of time. I enjoy the challenge of incorporating Time into my work. Along with the mechanics, I intend to use wit, whimsicality, and maybe a little sarcasm, to comment on our foibles, and the frequent insanity of life.
